Graduate Marine Engineering (GME) is designed for Mechanical Engineering graduates who wish to become Marine Engineers. After completing DG Shipping-approved training, candidates can begin their careers onboard merchant ships.

Career Growth
Begin as a Junior Marine Engineer and progress to Chief Engineer through experience and certification.
If someone joins the Merchant Navy through the GME (Graduate Marine Engineering) route, they enter the engine department. The career progression is based on completing sea time, passing competency examinations, and gaining experience. Here's the typical rank hierarchy:
1 | GME Cadet (Trainee Marine Engineer)
1 year (course) | Complete GME training at an approved institute. Gain practical sea-time and learn engine room operations under supervision.
2 | Fourth Engineer
6 months sea-time | Obtaining Class IV CoC. Responsible for specific machinery like purifiers, compressors, and pumps.
3 | Third Engineer
12 months sea-time | Responsible for auxiliary engines and boilers. Gained after significant sea time as 4th Engineer.
4 | Second Engineer
12-18 months sea-time | Requires Class II CoC. Overseeing daily maintenance and managing all engine room personnel.
5 | Chief Engineer
Requires Class I CoC | The final onboard rank. Responsible for all mechanical, electrical, and technical systems for the entire vessel.
6 | Technical Superintendent
Senior Management | A shore-based role overseeing a fleet of vessels, providing technical support and regulatory guidance.
